Everyone Should Have A Mudroom!

Located just inside the back or side door lies one of the most overlooked parts of the house. This secondary entryway is likely the most used, serving as a drop zone for just about everything from clothing to groceries to athletic gear. The mudroom is not a new concept; it has traditionally been a space at the back door meant to keep outside elements from damaging the surfaces of your home. But today’s mudrooms have become multifunctional flex spaces that get a lot of use. Mudrooms are a great way to control the chaos of daily life!

Focus on Function

A successful mudroom requires a place to sit, such as a bench (check out our floating bench brackets here), a place to hang outerwear such as jackets and scarves, and a place to store shoes. Benches, cubbies and counter space are essential. Having a designated space for each member of the family is also a surefire way to keep things organized. Other essential elements might include a deep sink, a compact washing machine (for dirty items coming in the door) and a floor drain.

Select Durable Materials

Since the mudroom is a main artery of the home, opt for materials that can handle heavy use. The flooring material you choose is one of the most important decisions. Porcelain tile is an excellent choice here and the looks available are nearly limitless. While a rug can soften the hard surfaces, an outdoor rug is a practical choice for this space.

Any custom cabinets should be painted in a high gloss or semi-gloss to help prevent chipping and dents. For easier cleanup, use indoor-outdoor fabrics for upholstered items like bench cushions. Washable paint is a good choice for walls, but a commercial-grade vinyl wall covering will last for many years. 

Storage and More Storage

Take advantage of every inch to create storage areas for keeping your family organized. Floor to ceiling cabinets, open shelving, cubbies, or even lockers can line a wall to give all family members their own storage space.
