How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Cabinet

How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Cabinet

Kitchen cabinets are the backbone of any kitchen and are one of the most important decisions you can make when remodeling your kitchen. When selecting your kitchen cabinetry, you’ll need to consider quality, durability, and functionality, as well aesthetics. Replacing your cabinets is not something you want to do very often, so it’s important to get it right the first time.

While choosing new kitchen cabinets can be a difficult decision to make, here are some tips to help you get started.

Choose the Door Profile

First things first. Because cabinet doors are the most visible design elements in the kitchen, the door style is an important decision. A great place to start is with the door profile.

Flat Panel Doors

The center panel of the flat panel door is flat rather than raised or contoured. These doors can be traditional, transitional, or contemporary.

Raised Panel Doors

The center panel of the raised panel door is raised with a profile or contour. They work well in traditional or transitional design schemes.

Recessed Panel Doors

A recessed panel door is a cabinet door with a center panel that is slightly depressed.

Slab Doors

A slab cabinet door style is a solid door with no frame or panel. You’ll find this style mostly in transitional or contemporary designs.

Select Your Door Style

There are different styles within each door profile, so the next step is to narrow down your style. Think about what style resonates with you. Is your style modern, traditional, rustic, contemporary, country, or perhaps industrial? Go to a cabinet showroom to see samples and take photos of your top four or so. From there, delete the ones you like least until you are left with your top choice. Try not to go back and look at more samples!

Choose the Color and Finish

Do you already know your dream cabinet color and finish? If so, this step will be a breeze. If you are unsure, this is a good time to consult a kitchen designer. Some things to consider:

White kitchens are timeless and are great for cottages, traditional-style kitchens, and modern kitchens.

Two-toned kitchens create a nice contrast to add a little drama to the space.  Dark cabinets with light countertops or light cabinets with very dark countertops are very on-trend. Opting for light upper cabinets contrasted with dark lower cabinets is also a great look and will help make the kitchen look larger.

Think About Function

As the chef and cleaner of your kitchen, you likely know what will work best for you, but remember that  Here are some things to consider:

Drawers in lower cabinets instead of doors and shelves make it easier to reach things like dishes and pots and pans, whereas cabinet doors force you to reach into the back to grab certain items.

Drawer and cabinet organizers and specialty pull-outs abound. Pantry pullouts, utensil organizers, lazy Susans, dish drawer separators, roll-out spice cabinets, and trash pullouts are just a few of the many great storage solutions available.

Soft-close cabinet hardware installed in cabinet doors and drawers creates a smooth, quiet self-closing motion—no more leaving drawers open because they shut all on their own!

Maximize Every Inch

One of the best ways to maximize your space is with a kitchen island. Kitchen Islands offer additional work surface and can be used for seating as well as storage underneath. (Eliminate bulky legs and corbels under your extended island countertop with our Hidden Island Support Brackets!)

Add Your Personality

Adding decorative accent doors, glass doors, and open shelving are ways you can inject your personality into your cabinetry. (Check out our selection of Heavy-Duty Shelf Brackets to safely support your open shelving.)
